Dinosaur Project

Plan for Dinosaur Project
By design, the kindergarten students will conduct their preliminary research and record their findings about the dinosaur they have chosen.  They will then collaborate with third grade students who will assist in the creation of a comprehensive presentation.   The end product will be an iBook.
“Timeline” of events
  1. K students introduced to the Dinosaurs folder on the iPad  ... 4/18/12.... Done
  2. K students explore apps in order to select a dinosaur for their presentation...4/20/12 .... Done
  3. K students research chosen dinosaur ...Ongoing
  4. K students record observations...Ongoing ...9 out of 10 students have completed preliminary observations ...4/27/12 ...as of 5/4/12 all of the 10 kindergarten students have completed their illustrations and video recordings.
  5. Joint in-depth research with 3rd grade students...Projected start date - May 2nd...actual start date 5/7/12 due to scheduling and logistics.
  6. Third grade students record findings

Process used to front-load kindergarten students prior to collaboration with 3rd grade students

The photos and video below offer quick insight into the process of preparing to collaborate with 3rd grade students. Here is a brief description of the process.

Apps were purchased to cater and support both kindergarten and 3rd grade students.
Kindergarten oriented apps were exploratory and simple in design and content.  For example: Dino Digger, Dinosaur Puzzle and Dinosaurs.  Apps geared towards third graders were chosen to enable in-depth research and exploration.  For example, National Geographic Kids - Dinosaurs and Britannica Kids - Dinosaurs (the second one bought since the picture was taken).  Additionally, we have also employed the assistance of iTunes U and selected video clips to assist the students in acquiring information from the scientific community.

The kindergarten students used National Geographic Kids to select their dinosaur.  They spent abut 15 minutes browsing in order to finalize their selection.  This was done with minimal assistance.

Conducting research was also done fairly independently.  The guidance given pertained to within-the-app navigation.

Pre-recorded captions and text enabled them to focus on listening and gain information about their dinosaur.

2. Conducting research

Within the small group, a few kids explored the apps independently while others were paired

in order to promote peer discourse and assistance in illustrating their dinosaur.
The culminating activity of kindergarten independent research was recording their observations/interesting details using  the camera on the iPad.

3. Peer assistance in drawing the picture

4.Student is describing the dinosaur he has drawn on the
app Penultimate - Prompt: Tell me what it looks like.
